Ned Malone is a newspaper reporter and former World War I correspondent with the "Tribune" who joined Professor George Challenger's expedition to the prehistoric plateau.
He is portrayed by David Orth in the series, and by William deVry in the pilot 'miniseries' episode.
Biography[]
World War 1[]
Ned was a war correspondent during World War 1. In the year 1915, he was with a British military squad lead by Seargent Haskell. The squad encountered German military forces and the entire squad was killed save for Malone who discovered a paper containing important tactical information which he gave to HQ and was able to avert a battle.
After witnessing the death of Haskell's squad, Malone used a hot air balloon to report on the war from safely above the violence.
Challenger Expedition[]
In the year 1919, Malone attended Challenger's meeting at the London Zoological society where he listened to Challenger's claims of a plateau in South America which is inhabited by dinosaurs. Malone offered to join the expedition as an unbiased witness.
After canoeing down the Amazon river, the members of the expedition set up camp at the base of the plateau. Cannibals attacked the members on the following morning leaving only Malone, Challenger, Lord John Roxton, Professor Arthur Summerlee, and Marguerite Krux alive to board the hot air balloon and fly to the plateau.
Arrival on the plateau[]
The hot air balloon crashed on the plateau due to dangerous updrafts. As the group scouted the area, Malone follows a whistling noise to a bunch of moving flowers, he watched with amusement at the flowers but a large plant in a tree opened up and grabbed him with several vines in attempt to eat him. The group followed Malone's screams to find that he has been rescued by Veronica Layton. Veronica welcomed the group to her treehouse and assisted them on their search for a way off the plateau. The tribe of Zanga Indians agreed to have the tribe leader's daughter Assai to take the group to a cave which leads to the bottom of the plateau, but the escape attempt is failed due to the greed of Marguerite who accidentally caused a cave in by attempting to collect crystals in the cave.
As the group headed back to the Zanga village, a group of apemen attacked them. Malone and Veronica fled and encountered a Tyrannosaurus Rex, which they led to the group of apemen. As the apemen fight the T-Rex, the explorers flee back to the Zanga village.
First encounter with Lizardmen[]
Malone and the explorers fell into a whirlpool and resurfaced at a different location on the plateau. They are captured by a race of humanoid lizards led by Tribune. After a couple of days in captivity, the explorers escape the lizardmen and return to Veronica's treehouse.
The Hive[]
After Summerlee is stung by a large bee, Malone goes with Roxton and Veronica to the home of a healer named Adama who tells them of her first encounter with the bees who slaughtered her village and abducted her infant daughter Elura. Adama reveals that the queen bee's royal jelly is the only cure for Summerlee's sting. They go to the giant bee hive and encounter Elura now grown and adapted to life in the hive, who orders the bees to attack. They get the royal jelly and burn down the hive, killing Elura in the process, and saving Summerlee's life.
Cave of Fear[]
Challenger is taken captive by Lady Cassandra Yorkton who journeyed to the plateau with her late husband and became leaders of a native tribe. Yorkton says she will release Challenger if the others bring her the remains of her husband, which lie in a taboo cave containing hallucinogenic fungus. On the Way to the cave, Malone is wounded by a Velociraptor, and stays behind with Veronica, while Roxton, Marguerite and Summerlee continue to the cave. Wanting to prove his skill to Veronica, Malone saves Veronica from 2 raptors. The others return with Mr. Yorkton's remains which contains the fungus causing her to hallucinate and unintentionally shoot a member of the tribe causing the rest to kill her and the explorers to escape.
The Christecs[]
Malone, Roxton and Marguerite explore while Challenger and Summerlee are captured by a group of people who are part of a mixed Aztek and Catholic religion, who accuse Summerlee of being a witch for saving a young girl from drowning. Marguerite reads Malone's journals and rudely tears a page out due to her being mentioned, causing Malone to snap and threaten her. They eventually find the Christecs and convince them of Summerlee's innocence.
Showdown with Niko[]
As Malone and Veronica's relationship develops, a native named Niko meets Veronica after dreaming of her and believing it to be prophecy for them to be together. Niko and Malone fight for Veronica's honor, but Veronica threatens to kill herself if they don't stop fighting. Niko leaves heartbroken and Veronica tells Ned that she "belongs" to nobody, casting doubt of their relationship.
Druids[]
Malone, Roxton, and Marguerite are searching for a way off the plateau when they are surrounded by a strange mist. A group of Druids, led by Bokra surround them and discover a birthmark on Marguerite's shoulder, identical to the mark of Morrighan who is revealed to be Marguerite's druid ancestor who sent the druids adrift in time to save them. The druids need Marguerite to prove herself by finding 2 sacred emeralds. The explorers fight through dinosaurs and chameleons and find the emeralds. After giving Bokra the emeralds, the druids say goodbye to Marguerite and leave to another time. The explorers are returned to a misty area in the jungle, after the mist passes, Malone and Roxton have no recollection of the events that just occurred.
Paradise[]
The explorers find a dying old man in the jungle, the old man recognizes Veronica. Veronica discovers him to be Sinta who guided her parents' expedition eleven years earlier when he was only nineteen years old, but for some odd reason, Sinta appears to be elderly now. The explorers go where Sinta ran from and are attacked by an Ankyosauras and cornered in a cave. Suddenly a door opens in the cave and the explorers discover a paradise led by Kirin. Malone is suspicious of the lack of elderly people and searches around as the others enjoy themselves. Malone discovers Kirin forcing Sinta's wife Talibo into a plant which drains her life energy. Malone is captured and put into the plant as well the next day making him appear very old. Roxton and the others discover whats really going on, Kirin feeds the plant people's life energy, which in turn provides them fruit to keep those who eat the fruit appear young. Kirin is killed and the others feed Malone the fruit, making him young again. They then destroy the plant's roots causing the rest of the inhabitants to fight each other for the fruit as the explorers escape.
1st Death and Resurrection[]
While exploring with Roxton, Summerlee, and Challenger, Malone follows a woman's screams into a grove. Malone steps into a trap and is killed by a poison dart. The woman was screaming due to her giving birth, the shaman, Lento promises to resurrect Malone at his village in the trees. After resurrecting Malone, Lento is overrun by Malone's inner evil combined with all the other evil trapped in himself. Lento is sentenced to death but, Malone saves him from being hanged to repay him for saving his life. Lento kills the village chief Yuna's granddaughter and escapes the village. Yuna orders Malone's execution to restore the balance but Malone agrees to kill Lento to restore the balance. Malone finds and shoots Lento, who's humanity returns and thanks Malone for giving him back his soul.
Cave Dwellers[]
Malone, Challenger, and Marguerite are trapped in a cave-in and encounter a group of albino people led by a blind child known as the Oracle who can read minds. The Oracle reads Malone and Challenger's minds to determine if they will keep their existence a secret in exchange for a way out of the cave, they are both revealed to keep their word but Marguerite is accused of lying so the Oracle orders their execution. The Cave is revealed to be a volcano and as the walls heat up and water boils, the explorers escape the cave.
The German Pilot[]
Malone, Summerlee and Marguerite are together in a field and they see a German airplane crash land nearby. They check the wreckage and find a wounded Dieter, a German pilot who still believes the war is still going on. Dieter fall unconscious and they take him to the treehouse. Dieter awakens and recognizes Marguerite from Berlin. Dieter forces them to repair the plane and he escapes the plateau on it.
Absolute Power[]
Camelot[]
Malone, Roxton, Veronica, and Marguerite find a Camelot type kingdom led by King Gawain who wants Marguerite as his bride. Gawain's advisor, Vordred, is revealed to be conspiring against Gawain. Vordred forces Roxton and Malone to battle a T-Rex, believing it to be a dragon. Malone kills the T-Rex by causing several boulders to fall on it from a cliff. Vordred is killed and Gawain releases the explorers, who tell Summerlee and Challenger what happened, yet they don't believe them.
Tracking a Fairy[]
Malone, Marguerite and Summerlee are photographing dinosaurs when they unknowingly picture an elderly woman wearing radio headphones. They track the Fairy Woman down and she agrees to exchange the headphones and radio for a drop of Malone's blood for a ritual because he is a virgin and his blood restores her youth. They then discover the radio inside a crashed airplane but as Malone beings to bring it out as the T-Rex approaches he tripped and dropped the radio on the Parasaurolophus carcass. When Marguerite tries to reach the radio but Summerlee shoot and broke it to prevent her from getting killed by T-Rex.
Time Travelers[]
When the explorers discover a temple that has a tunnel leading off the plateau, they meet 2 different time travelers, James Kemper and Catherine Reilly. Catherine tries to kill Marguerite and after failing to, she warns them that Marguerite will breathe spores if she enters in the tunnel, and the spores contain a plague that threatens mankind. James Kemper tries to convince them that Catherine is just an assassin and that there is no plague. Kemper is caught in a lie when he says Malone and his girlfriend, Gladys, will have three children, though Gladys is actually infertile, Kemper then knocks Malone unconscious. Kemper and Catherine are both killed but Marguerite and Roxton seal off the tunnel and prevent the plague from happening.
Largo[]
Malone, Roxton, and Marguerite rescue a man from being eaten alive. They take the man to the treehouse where he reveals himself to be Tom Layton, Veronica's father. A bounty hunter, Kartas captures Malone and Roxton and warns them that "Tom Layton" is a murderer and that was his execution they saved him from. "Tom" creates a potion that causes Summerlee, Veronica, and Challenger to loyally serve him. "Tom" is revealed to really be an escaped slave named Largo, who was once chained beside the Laytons and learned from them about the potion, the treehouse, and Veronica. Largo kills Kartas and is then himself killed by Roxton, the potion loses it's effect on the others shortly after.
The Pharaoh[]
Malone is exploring with Challenger and Marguerite and they discover a mummy burial ground. They dig up the mummy, Ramses, who says that his sister Nefertiti recently buried him alive and thanks the group. Ramses convinces them to help him regain his throne from his sister if he agrees not to kill her. They go to a pyramid and capture Nefertiti. The following morning, Ramses blinds Nefertiti with a scepter and confiscates the group's guns and sends them on their way. The explorers realizes Ramses is evil and they sneak into the pyramid and free Nefertiti. The explorers then track Ramses down and kill him by reflecting his scepter's energy back at him using mirrors, and Nefertiti is made the new pharaoh.
Defense of the Treehouse[]
Malone and Veronica encounter a group of raiders who try to take the treehouse. They drop bags of meat down at the raiders, who are chased away by veliciraptors.
Prophecy[]
Malone, Roxton, Veronica, and Marguerite encounter a gypsy woman, Isadore who envisions Malone having his heart torn from his chest by a beast with claws. Roxton and Marguerite are captured by a barbaric village and Malone is forced to fight the leader, Kaysan, who wears clawed gloves. Malone defeats Kaysan with Veronica's help, beating his prophesied death.
Parasite Infection[]
Malone is collecting firewood with Veronica when he takes a break at a pond. At the pond, Malone meets a woman, Kaya, who emerges from the pond and kisses Malone. Kaya has a strange vine-looking thing on her spine. Malone takes Kaya to the treehouse to meet everyone, sparking jealousy from Veronica. Kaya and Malone sleep together and Malone developes a vine thing on his back as well. Summerlee figures that the vine is really a parasite that infected him and Kaya, Veronica leaves to confront them at the pond. Kaya leaves Malone at the pond and Malone reveals that he no longer has the parasite and that Kaya is the last of a dying race who took over Kaya to survive and she needed a male host to procreate, and after being impregnated by Malone, she removed the parasite from his body.
Alliance with Tribune[]
The explorers attempt to leave the plateau on the balloon, but Malone decides to stay because he is in love with Veronica. Malone and Veronica encounter Tribune for the second time who warns them about Drakul, the leader of a savage tribe who knows how to make gunpowder and has been slaughtering innocent villages. Malone and Veronica form a shaky alliance with Tribune in order to stop Drakul and his raiders. Malone and Veronica find out that Drakul has destroyed the balloon and captured Marguerite and Summerlee. Using an explosion by gunpowder as a distraction, Malone and Veronica rescue Summerlee and Marguerite and reunite with Roxton and Challenger. The explorers flee the raiders to a bridge over a river canyon. Summerlee is shot by a crossbow wielding raider and falls off the bridge to the river below. Malone is tackled by a raider onto the bridge, he manages to push the raider off but Malone himself falls off shortly after. Tribune then throws a gunpowder bomb at the bridge, destroying it and causing Roxton, Challenger, and Drakul to fall off too.
Malone regains consciousness in a pterodactyl's nest set far above the river. Malone attempts to climb up the canyon but the pterodactyl arrives and carries Malone away. Malone is flown over a river and Marguerite, Veronica, and Challenger see him and Marguerite shoots the pterodactyl which then drops Malone into the river, he is then reunited with them and they leave in search of Roxton. They find that Roxton has been rescued by Tribune who claims to have seen Summerlee go over a waterfall that is rumored to be a way off the plateau. The group accompanies Tribune to a fishing village hoping to charter a boat but nobody will use a boat anymore because of a Plesiosaurus that attacks anyone who sails the inland sea. The man who runs the village, Nemak imprisons everyone except Marguerite who seduces him, knocks him unconscious, and frees everyone else. Nemak regains consciousness and fights the group only to be killed and eaten by Tribune. The group then leaves on a canoe given to them by Raina. The group kills the Plesiosaur by throwing a lantern at it. Once on the other side of the sea, Tribune leaves the group who return to the treehouse and reflect on Summerlee's possible death.
The Amazons[]
Malone, Roxton, and Challenger hear a woman scream and see the woman get wounded by a raptor. The Raptor also wounds Challenger before it is killed. Several female warriors arrive and take everyone to their village. The leader of the women, Queen Selena, treats Challenger's wounds and thanks the men for assisting one of their warriors. Malone is suspicious of the women, believing them to be the famed tribe of warrior women, The Amazons, who murder men after procreation, as well as male babies. Selena tells them that they don't murder men, and they give male babies to their fathers while they raise the females. Malone is still suspicious and investigates the village and discovers several male prisoners who warn him of the women, Malone is then captured by Hippolita. Malone is taken to Selena who informs Malone and the others that the prisoners are prisoners of war who kill their women, and tell Malone that he is welcome to leave if he wants to. A celebration is held, which the 3 men attend and watch as Veronica and Marguerite, who arrived in search of the men, spar against Phoebe and Thea. Later that night Malone has sex with both Phoebe and Thea, impregnating at least Phoebe, Veronica arrives and rescues Malone and meets up with Marguerite and Roxton. They free the prisoners and during the distraction they try to free Challenger but see that Selena is holding him captive. The next morning, Selena sentences the group to be burned to death for freeing the prisoners. The prisoners arrive with reinforcements and a battle breaks out in which several Amazons, including Thea, are killed. The explorers help the Amazons and stop the fighting, the Amazons agree to give up their custom of killing men after sex and live in coexistence with them.
